THE FUTURE OF CLEVELAND

Public Service

  • Expand curbside recycling program citywide.
  • Implement proactive, systematic street repair and resurfacing program to improve overall quality of Cleveland's roadways and reduce potholes.
  • Continue record-setting pace of condemned structure demolition and increase programming to rehabilitate houses that should be saved.
  • Construction to begin on two new recreation facilities in 2009.

Economic Development

  • Funnel more City and local business dollars back into our local economy to stimulate the local economy.
  • Build a green economy that promotes green collar industries, creates green collar jobs and provides access to those jobs for Cleveland residents.
  • Create an environment that encourages entrepreneurship and provides business support to local small businesses and minority and female-owned enterprises.
  • Leverage City economic development dollars to attract new companies, retain existing business and grow the economy.
  • The Jackson Administration is working with the White House to use the Federal Stimulus plan as a catalyst to create new businesses in the city of Cleveland, to help existing businesses to continue to access capital and to provide jobs for residents.

Jobs

  • Utilize newly merged Workforce Development system to remove barriers to employment.
  • Transform traditional manufacturing labor force into a highly skilled and experienced workforce for the jobs of the future.
  • Create career paths for young people through vocational training and apprenticeships within the City and with local businesses.
  • Leverage stimulus dollars to increase job training and job placement opportunities to meet the demand of existing jobs.

Safety & Security

  • Continue Neighborhood Safety Initiatives and Gun Suppression Initiatives to address crime hot spots.
  • Employ aggressive police tactics along with community outreach efforts to help prevent crime and empower residents.
  • Hire new police officers and firefighters in 2009 and offer additional entrance exams to maintain safety forces strength.
  • Create community outreach and engage residents to continue improvements in neighborhoods to reduce crime.

Education

  • Create equal, high achieving curriculum and achievement standards throughout the region to ensure all children receive excellent education.
  • Develop regional magnet schools to offer Cleveland students and suburban students unique, 21st Century education.
  • Assess every child to ensure that all children, including at-risk and gifted children, are properly assigned and receive the education that is right for them.
  • Implement longer school days and school years to increase student achievement.
  • Create financial aid opportunities for all students to attend college.

Seniors

  • Empower senior citizens through the Senior Power program, focusing on crime and fraud prevention and increase access to senior services.
  • Continue Senior Initiative to identify and help senior citizens facing the most difficult housing and social services conditions.
  • Build capacity to provide programs to senior citizens and make every City neighborhood a model for elder-friendly living.
